Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts! My name is Farhad Mammadov, a passionate UX/UI designer, and I am thrilled to present to you my final project case study, which marks the culmination of my journey at Code Academy. In this project, I have focused on enhancing the travel planning experience by leveraging user-centered design principles and methodologies.

Traveling is a remarkable way to explore new cultures, broaden horizons, and create unforgettable memories. However, as many of us have experienced, planning a trip can often be a daunting and overwhelming task. With countless options, websites, and tools available, travelers often struggle to find the right information, make informed decisions, and create personalized itineraries that truly match their preferences.

The Problem:

Everyone loves to travel. One of the things we spend the most time on when preparing to travel is planning the trip properly. Planning a proper trip and remembering the experiences we have while traveling is one of the basic needs, and it is necessary to create an interesting digital responsibility that meets the wishes of people who travel a lot or who are just starting to travel.

Recognizing this common challenge, I embarked on a mission to develop a user-friendly and intuitive travel planning platform that simplifies the process, empowers users, and inspires their wanderlust. Through extensive research, benchmarking, and iterative design, I aimed to create a seamless digital experience that caters to the diverse needs and desires of travelers.

In this article, I will walk you through the journey of my final project, sharing the key steps, insights, and design decisions that shaped the outcome. From conducting user research and benchmarking popular travel websites to crafting personas, designing information architecture, and creating engaging content, every aspect of the project has been carefully considered to deliver an exceptional travel planning experience.

Whether you are a fellow designer, a travel enthusiast, or simply curious about the intersection of UX/UI design and travel, I hope this article provides valuable insights and inspiration for creating meaningful digital experiences.

So, without further ado, let’s embark on this exciting journey to enhance the way we plan and experience travel!

On the first day of my project, I focused on defining the project steps and timeline and outlining the necessary steps to ensure efficient progress.

Defining UX stages

To streamline my project and ensure a systematic approach, I leveraged Notion to define my timeline. I meticulously divided each UX stage into smaller, manageable steps, which were then incorporated into the timeline. This enabled me to have a clear overview of the entire process, ensuring that I could allocate appropriate time and resources to each stage and track my progress effectively. Notion proved to be an invaluable tool in structuring and organizing my project timeline, enabling a smooth and well-organized workflow.

Time table on Notion

To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges travelers face when planning trips and while traveling, I employed two research methods: interviews and surveys. These methods allowed me to gather valuable insights and uncover the needs and pain points of potential users.

Interview Method: To uncover the major difficulties people encounter when making travel plans, I conducted interviews with a diverse group of individuals. One of the key concerns that emerged was the laborious process of obtaining visas. Many participants expressed the desire for more visa-free travel options, particularly in Europe. Dealing with visa-related paperwork, scheduling appointments, and gathering necessary documents proved to be tiring and time-consuming. Finding affordable tickets was also mentioned as a challenge by the interviewees. They mentioned the importance of being able to select a destination before purchasing a ticket, as it is not always easy to find cheap tickets for pre-planned trips.

Survey Method: To further understand the preferences and needs of travelers, I conducted a survey. One of the survey questions focused on whether participants used their computers or mobile phones more for internet browsing when it came to travel planning. The majority of respondents indicated a preference for using websites on their computers for various planning tasks, such as making lodging and travel reservations and accessing destination maps. However, when seeking visual inspiration and researching destinations, participants mentioned using social media platforms like Instagram and connecting with others who had already visited their intended destinations.

Some survey statistics

By combining insights from both the interviews and surveys, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the challenges travelers face during the planning process and the digital tools they rely on to assist them.

In the next article:

I’ll go into detail about the research techniques used in the following chapter, including the survey and interview questions that were thoughtfully designed to glean insightful information from travelers. I obtained a greater knowledge of the difficulties and pain areas they have as they plan their vacation by examining their comments.

I’ll also talk about the benchmarking research done on well-known travel websites like Booking.com, TripAdvisor, and Airbnb. I was able to determine these systems’ advantages and disadvantages thanks to this analysis, which was helpful for creating the best possible user experience.

I’ll also discuss the idea of persona cards and empathy maps, which helped me sympathize with the target audience and comprehend their requirements, aspirations, and behaviors more thoroughly. These technologies offered priceless insights that influenced the project’s design choices at every stage.

Finally, I’ll give a summary of the main conclusions and revelations gleaned from the UX research stage. This will provide a strong foundation for the project’s later phases, when I’ll turn these ideas into workable design solutions.

Watch for the following chapter, when we’ll delve deeper into the UX research findings and examine how they influenced the creation of a cutting-edge travel planning service.
